Rough sandpaper on my gums, what could cause this?

Irritation??: This could be an irritation you can see things like this when people put chewing tobacco in one place too long, or hold mints or candy as a habit in the same place for long periods of time. I would analyze your routines and see if this applies to your situation, i would then have your dentist do a routine oral cancer screening and if necessary he/she will send you to an oral surgeon for biopsy.
