There is a theoretical risk of someone who is immunocompromised coming down with gastroenteritis if they come in contact with the stool of a vaccine recipient. As such, they should avoid contact with stools for 14 days after the first dose of the vaccine.

2 different vaccines: There are 2 brands available: Rotarix (2 dose schedule) and RotaTeq (3 dose schedule) both are started at baby's 2 month visit though can be given as early as six weeks. A second dose is given 6-8 weeks later (can receive as early as 4 weeks after) and third dose (depending on which vaccine) no later than 32 weeks of age. This is given by mouth and not as a shot.

Rota virus vaccine : The rota virus vaccines available currently are very safe with very   low  risk for intussesception. 5 mos is not late but it should be completed by age 6 mos. I hope that was her 2nd dose of the 2 dose series. I have not seen a single case of inussesception in relation to rota virus vaccine. Good luck.

Not harmless: In addition to causing severe illness of up to a week or more, since it often occurs in epidemic form in daycare centers and other areas in which children are present, parents must stay home and this accounts for lost work days and income.  That is in addition to patients who may require hospitalization, and for the rare death.
