Tarsal tunnel syndro: The swelling can squeeze nerves in your foot that go mostly to the forefoot and toes. Elevate it and use ice to reduce the swelling 9even tho it feels cold already. Use water ice for 20-30" at a time 3-4 times a day. Do check for a fracture. It can happen agin. You may have a torn ligament that allows this to reoccur.

Ankle sprain 2 weeks: The ankle needs to be evaluated; x-rays are needed to check for any fractures. If there is still swelling, try to keep the ankle elevated and apply ice/cold on it for 20-30 minutes, a few times a day but an hour or so between the ice/cold applications. Treatment will depend on what is seen on the x-rays.

You never know...: Hopefully, you haven't damaged the ankle more than a minor sprain. If this is recent, 6 hrs., you might apply ice to the area and rest it. The bruising can take a couple of days, if at all. Swelling means that the injury is requiring stability and the body will supply the water cast, so to speak. If the pain does not start diminishing in a day or two, you might have it evaluated.

If you have seen an orthopod and are sure that there is no major damage, use crutches or a cane so you don't limp as much, this and elevate the leg, ankle above the knee &amp; knee above the hip when you can. These will help with the swelling.

RICE: Yes. You should start with rice as a home treatment. After 48-72 hours you may switch to heat (instead of ice). As your pain starts to subside you may add stretching as tolerated, and massage. Once pain is gone, then gently return to activity as your strength and proprioception may need time to recovery after the injury, and you don't want to further injure yourself by going "all out" too fast.
