Side Effects: Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a good drug, but it does have significant side effects. It can cause high heart rate, appetite suppression, and even psychological side effects (hallucinations, etc) in some patients. It does have addictive/abusive potential. So, it does a good job when used correctly, but you just have to keep in close follow up with your doctor. You can be quite sleepy if you abruptly stop ritalin (methylphenidate).

Unlikely: Very unlikely and if so the symptoms will be mild. We do prescribe stimulants and recommend "drug holidays" on weekends and vacations if the need for hi level of concentration and performance is less.

Methylphenidate can : Produce physical and psychological withdrawal effects described as similar to amphetamines and Cocaine when taken in high doses (or if sensitive to prescribed doses), especially if abused intranasally. A person who experiences withdrawal effects should consult their physician for safe management of withdrawing from methylphenidate.

Not recommended: Concerta/ Neucon  is a longer acting medication. It isn't really designed for as needed use like the shorter acting stimulants.

i'm taking methylphenidate 18mg + pregabalin 150mg daily and it helps. i have not noticed any withdrawal effects when stopping or any sign of dependence. how likely is it for me to get addicted to each, if i keep taking this same dose for years?

Depends: Taking prescribed  meds for a medical reason is using them correctly, as opposed to abusing a substance for its effect in the body. Addiction may have a genetic link  as well, so I would ask if you or blood family has addiction to any substance (tobacco, alcohol,gambling, etc). Also, tolerance is NOT addiction! If you were to stop these meds suddenly, you would have this physiologic effect.

In add pts, it has the effect of calming down their revving engine so they can concentrate more effectively, complete tasks, not be in constant motion. It's a controlled substance which requires a special prescription in many states.
