Sore throat: Throat lozenges and gargle with mouthwash several times daily for 5 days may prevent an office visit.  Sore throats are often viral and resolve without antibiotics.

cold symptoms since 2/11/14. still congested, sore throat, chills and aches. can the flu or cold last this long? any idea what this can be? thanks!

Complicated: Flu can linger for couple of weeks, hopefully you haven't got re infected with another virus or had bacterial secondary infection. May be time for exam, probable antibiotic.

Depends on: How long you have been having symptoms, and whether or not the otc medications are working for you. We are still in flu season and if the symptoms have been present for less than 48hrs you may benefit from the use of a medication like tamiflu (oseltamivir). Beyond that we usually encourage supportive therapy with the otc medications. Hope you fell better soon.

Dizzy!: Please go to the nearest Emergency facility where they should be able to get you better quite quickly.
If that does not work out you are likely to be referred to a primary doctor.

Infection: One side or both doesn't matter as far as diagnosis. The vast majority are from viruses. If concern for strep head to your doctor.

Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly, mainly to see if antibiotics like amoxicillin are needed. Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can decrease pain temporarily.

Ear hurts, too? : You have pharyngitis or tonsillitis.  Without fever it's most likely a viral infection.  If your symptoms aren't gone after another 2-3 days, or you get fever, see your doctor.

Can call Dr on video: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor (call first) if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. COVID-19 infections tend to have cough, whereas strep usually lacks cough but has more throat pain.

Get medical eval: Seek medical care asap if you think a spider bit you &amp; you have fever, severe pain (can be felt at bite site &amp; possibly chest, back or abdomen); abdominal cramping /rigidness or ulceration of skin at site. You may need a tetanus shot (if you don't know when your last shot was or it has been &gt; 10 years). Also medical care if you develop signs of secondary infection.
