Rest: In general treat early with rest, ice, compression and elevation.  Keep the knee relatively flexed.  Once you are out of the acute phase of the injury begin gentle progressive stretches.  Once you can stretch pain free...Usually a few weeks, then begin gentle progressive strengthening.  If you reinjur the muscle at any point, back up and start again.

why does my hamstring (grade 2 tear) still hurt 7 weeks after the injury?

: When a muscle tears, it also tears connective tissue, nerves and lymphatic tissue. As the muscle heals, scar tissue binds the area and then over time, slowly softens. Nerves can take longer to heal and may continue to send pain signals during this time. Make sure not to reinjure the area, as scar tissue is not as strong as the original connections. Use antiinflammatories to help with pain.

What is the 'hurt?': 'hurt' can be anything from a direct hit causing a contusion or bruise, to a strain of the muscle, to a tendon injury (connects muscle to bone). And any of these can be mild, moderate, severe, or even a complete muscle rupture.  Need a sports medicine/orthopedist to diagnose, to get specific DX and management.  In general with musculoskeletal injuries, pain means back off and check it out.

Hamstring saga: Dapending on the degree of your initial strain, the type of rehabilitation you had, and what type of sport you are involved in, hamstrings can take forever to heal. Avg professional dancer doesn't feel "normal" for 9-12 months. Runners- less time. Rehab includes core re-training-deep tissue massage/acupuncture helpful for improving blood flow to region. See physician to rule out other complication.

: You are learning how difficult hamstring injuries can be to rehabilitate  You need to follow a structured program. You should see a physical therapist for a long program to rehabilitate this injury. Ice / heat stretching and strengthening

: There are many reasons for back pain and it is difficult to determine without a full examination. However, back pain that switches side to side and can go down (or radiates as described in medical terms) to the hamstrings is typically an irritated disc that is putting pressure on the nerves that leave the back and go to the legs. This pain is commonly referred to as sciatica. Please see a doctor!
