Infection!: Sounds like you have an infection (conjunctivitis).  It could possibly be viral, bacterial, allergic, or a naso-lacrimal duct infection.  You need an exam to determine and then appropriate treatment.

question: my mother(64 yrs) accidentally spilled apple cider vinegar in her eyes last night. immediately water rinsed it. her right eye is normal, her left eye is red and feels heavy. plus she rubbed it a bit. will it be normal in day or two?

Continue to rinse: Gently continue to rinse her eyes with saline. Watch for signs of eye pain, blurry vision and if these occur, please see the Emergency Department. Avoid rubbing the eye. If not improved in 24 hours, please see your PCP or urgent care.

Several possibilitie: Is your vision affected?  Is there light sensitivity?  This could be an external infection or inflammation or it could be an internal inflammation termed iritis or uveitis.  It could also be a condition termed scleritis.  These need to be sorted out by your ophthalmologists especially if the vision is diminished.

Allergy: It sounds like you have an eye allergy.  If you are using any drops or cream on that side you may need to stop.  Use cold compressors, and use an allergy drop OTC like Alaway or Zadidor 2x per day.  Avoid rubbing it if you sleep on that side you may need to replace your old pillow.

Get an eye exam: There are many causes of eye redness, but not many causes of eye redness with vision loss and no other symptoms.  Some types of inflammation in the eye or of the cornea (the clear part of the eye) can cause redness and poor vision without the usual symptoms of pain, light sensitivity, or a sensation that something has scratched the eye. Some contact lens users have this, so get it checked asap.

Inflammation: Your eye could have one of several things.  You might have uveitis, an internal sterile inflammation which can be serious.  You might have corneal ulcer, a focal infection needing antibiotics.  You could have viral conjunctivitis, or allergy.  You should see your ophthalmologist as soon as possible to get diagnosis and treatment.
