Mgt: You may have a bruise on the rib. I would advise ice compresses and taking Motrin as tolerated for the pain. If it persists then, please see your PCP.

Do you have a rash?: Skin pain, particularly around the ribs, is worrisome for potentially being herpes zoster. You should see your physician to evaluate if you have the characteristic rash as well as for medications to decrease the pain and prevent complications.

Most likely trauma: The most suggestive description is that it hurts to touch it.  And that it hurts to cough suggests pleurisy or inflammation of the lung lining.  This can be anything from a significant contusion to the rib or even a small, non-displaced fracture. If it is slowly getting better, you can watch it. If pain is increasing or difficulty breathing, needs evaluation, your Doc or Urgent Care:)

Sounds like a sprain: You will have to lay off whatever you are doing. if its exercise you may not have stretched enough prior to the activity. so just rest for a couple of weeks and return to activity in smaal increments to tolerance.

Often costochondriti: Many people get rib pain and there are many causes. An orthopedic cause is costochondritis which is inflammation of the rib cage. In the differential could be zoster which often is on the ribs or problems in the lungs. Other dermatologic causes exist including skin rashes and burns. To find out exactly what it is, you should see your doctor and get treated.

i have enlarged liver & spleen , pain in my right side , could i have cancer. diagonists w/enlarged spleen in liver & pain on right side under ribs hurts to touch, getiing a ct done tomorrow, it's been 23 hours please answer..

The : The ct will be able to detect cancer if present. To answer your question, with any enlargement of organs there is a chance of cancer. However, there are also many other causes as well (fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, sickle cell disease etc.) hopefully your doctors will be able to figure out exactly the cause of your hepatosplenomegaly (enlarged liver and spleen) and come up with a treatment plan.

Myofascial: Assuming you have not been exposed to trauma (sports? fall? auto accident? abuse?), you have a myofascial syndrome - try an analgesic like ibuprofen or naproxen. Heat. Rest. Time.  Massage. If no improvement after a week: x-rays.

Costochondritis : Inflammation of the rib or rib cartilage is fairly common.( costochondritis). Consider taking an over the counter NSAID ( like ibuprofen) for a week . If no improvement see your primary care physician . Good luck!
