To: Cut the nerve: Rhizotomy literally means [nerve] 'root' (rhiz) 'cut' (otomy). The goal of a facet rhizotomy, either neck (cervical) rhizotomy or back (lumbar) is to provide pain relief by stopping the pain signals that the spine facet joints send to the brain.  Patients undergo facet joint injections to verify the exact location of pain generator then an electrode is then placed/heated (radiofrequency ablation).

Varies: It really comes down to the specific indication for the procedure.  In a properly selected patient with the perfect indications, a rhizotomy can be very successful.  The farther away you get from being a perfect candidate for the procedure, the success rate can drop tremendously.  Discuss the specifics of your case with your doctor.

Related to nerves: A rhizotomy is a procedure used to destroy nerve endings to prevent pain signals being sent to the brain.  There are a variety of ways to accomplish this. Sometimes a doctor will use heat or chemicals to destroy the nerves.  This is used for people who have not responded to more conservative pain treatments such as over the counter medicines or physical therapy.

Generally Good: Radiofrequency procedures  work well if a previous facet injection or medial branch block was performed with greater than 75-80% relief that was obtained.  As with anything there are failures, but quite low if the block worked well.  Risks are the same as with any spine procedure, no different.  Rare that you would be worse off afterwards.

Soreness: Generally most people are sore for a few days up to 1-2 weeks afterwards.  Recommend icing the area and take nsaids for at least the first few days around the clock to reduce this response.

Surgery on nerves: Dorsal rhizotomy is a procedure in which the posterior nerve bundles leaving the spinal cord are cleaved, cauterized, or ablated with radiofrequency to help block pain.  Some are performed by neurosurgeons and others are less invasively performed by pain doctors.
