Good question: The virus attaches to receptors on the walls of cells in the lining of our airways.  It is taken into the cell and causes the cell to release a variety of chemicals that produce the symptoms of a cold: fever,  runny nose, sore throat, etc.  Some of the chemicals also attract inflammatory response cells to the area of infection.

No: No, there isn't.  Even if there were, it wouldn't be of much use.  It would tell you what you already know: that you have a cold.  And since rhinovirus isn't the only virus that causes common colds, a negative test wouldn't help you either.

No: It is a picornavirus.  There are some similarities (it's genome is made of rna) but it is not a retrovirus (like hiv).   It is a cause of the common cold, and it typically not life threatening.

Many viruses: The "common cold" is caused by many viruses, though, as you point out, rhinovirus is the most common accounting for 30–80% of colds in a given season.  Others include a type of picornavirus with 99 known serotypes, coronavirus, influenza viruses, adenoviruses,  human parainfluenza viruses, human respiratory syncytial virus, enteroviruses and more.

Not easy!: The only certain way would be to live alone in a cave or on a mountain top, away from all other human beings. Short of that, you can wash your hands a lot during cold season and hope for the best.

It could but: If you have had symptoms for more than 7 days you may consider getting checked out to make sure you don't have a bacterial sinus infection.

Rhinovirus=a cold: Rhinovirus is the most common virus causing the common cold.  It's certainly associated with cough.  Unless you can't breathe well or cough up blood (in which case see a doctor asap), it likely will improve in the next week or so, with some annoying lingering cough for up to a month thereafter.
