Depends: Scarring on the retina can be either superficial or on the surface of the retina or it may be deeper. Superficial scarrin called an Epiretinal membrane can often times be removed with surgery. Deeper scarring may be permanent. A retina specialist can exam you and determine if treatment is an option.

i had retina reattachment 7 yrs ago. now scar growing around acuity area in eye i need to read.i am 77. should i have it removed?

Epiretinal Membrane: The surgical option for the epiretinal membrane you presumably have on the eye with the repaired retinal detachment is a pars plana vitrectomy with a membrane peeling. Only your retina specialist can predict what your chances of a good outcome are. In the meantime, consult a vision rehabilitation specialist to assist you in your reading and other daily living skills needs, before and after surgery.

why are patients still at lifelong risk of retinal detachment after surgery? if the vitreous is gone and no scar tissue/pvr then what else causes it?

Retinal Detachment: Any vitreous or retinal surgery has placed a stress on the retina which is like plastic wrap: it can tear easily. Risk also depends on glasses Rx: if you have a long eyeball (myopia usually) it stretches the retina.

i have a macular scar in my right eye including several holes in my retinal. what procedures should  i take? is it a bad idea to wear contacts?

Retinal treatment: To answer this question, it's best to answer each part individually:  1. Retinal scars have no treatment in modern day technology. 2. Retinal holes should be treated by a specialist with a laser to prevent retinal detachments. 3. Contact lenses do not pose risk to retinal disease, but it is not suggested for use in your good eye. Monocular patients need glasses for protection of the good eye.

i had 3 retinal detachment surgeries. the first was the scleral buckle then it tore from traction due to scar tissue. it tore a second time they then did the silicon oil method to help. when finished will i ever be able to get the buckle taken off?

Retinopathy: Retina is the inner most layer of the eye that can be affected by uncontrolled  diabetes or uncontrolled hyigh blood pressure. These conditions can either lead to fragile new vessel development or the bleeding of the existing vessels. When these heal by either laser or by themselves , it usually leads to retinal scarring.Sometimes these scars can contract and lead to retinal detachment.

after biopsy, darker spot in scar. results very mildly atypical. dr said if benign not to worry. appt in 6 mos follow up. should i go sooner?

Follow up: That is a reasonable time frame for follow up. But if you notice worrisome changes sooner that don't seem like normal healing don't hesitate to call for an earlier appointment.

Need to examine: A scar will remain at the site of surgery. It is not feasible to know what you consider swelling. Do you have pain at the site? If yes, consult your doctor. If there is no pain, you may just watch and wait.
