Retina & MJ: There are endocannabinoid receptors in your retina, as well as nearly everywhere else in your body.  These can be impacted by external cannabis, and not necessarily in a healing way.  Research on this is in its infancy.  Please ask your retina surgeon about this -- s/he will be your best advisor.

i had retinal detachment surgery nearly 8 weeks ago. i still have the gas bubble in my eye and my pupil is very dilated. i stopped the dilation drops about 6 weeks ago. is this normal or should i be concerned?

Not very: The techniques have been well worked out for retinal re-attachment.  But recovery depends upon the extent of the detachment, the cause of the detachment and whether the central vision is involved.  It also matters whether you have had previous surgery on that eye.  Discuss with the retinal surgeon prior to the surgery.

Yes & no: It can be a permanent cure for the retinal detachment, however always at increased risk of it re-detaching. You should keep in mind symptoms to look for like those discussed by your retina specialist. Some are decreased vision, flashing lights, increased floaters etc. Consult with your retina specialist for further education.

Depends on type: A simple retinal detach can be fixed in the office with a procedure called a pnuematic retinopexy.  A gas bubble is injected in the eye followed by cryo treatment or laser.  Face down positioning is required.  More complex retinal detachment will require surgery in a hospital or surgery center.  This usually requires a pars plana vitrectomy, buckle (not always), endolaser and gas.

Yes: Once the eye has healed after repair generally contact lenses can be worn.  Often, if a scleral buckle was used which encircles the eyeball this can induce more nearsightedness.  If this happens in one eye and is excessive, correction with contact lenses rather than glasses may be more comfortable.

Ask your eye surgeon: Your surgeon is the only one who knows the particulars about your case and his surgery.  Call his office and find out the answer, or make a follow up appointment with him to get your questions fully answered, if the office staff relays advice that you have questions about.
