my father has parkinson and one of his medications makes him gamble uncontrollably.he says he takes it to help him sleep,we tried to give him other different sleeping medications to try. he refuses. does the requip cause an extra high while gambling?

Dopamine: Please have your dad see his prescribing doctor.  Parkinson's drugs impact dopamine levels.  This can result in compulsive gambling or other compulsive, future-oriented behaviors (needing a "fix").  He may not want to give up this feeling but the doc will help and provide something else for sleep if appropriate and not an excuse to continue w/the med.  Peace and good health.

is it safe to take fluoxetine with parkinson's medications such as sinemet and requip (ropinirole)?

Mild interaction: There is no severe interaction although if the fluoxetine were to be sedating to you then you may feel somewhat sedated.  Additionally, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors that include fluoxetine have been known to produce mild extrapyramidal effects through obscure mechanisms.  This would translate into a potential for mild motoric phenomena that would be only a nuisance. Stay safe!

Yes: Requip is a branded version of the drug ropinirole, which is available in generic.  The once-a-day extended release version (Requip xl) is only available in a branded version.

Interesting: Very interesting, odd effect.  No simple answer.  Since you were on Requip (ropinirole) for many years are you sure this isn't an independent process developed during the time you were on Requip (ropinirole)?  There is a phenomenon we call, "True, True, and Unrelated": meaning two things occur in same time period but are not related.  If you really think it is related then new Rx depends on illness details.

DIFFERENT: Completely different classes of medications as Requip effects Dopamine for restless leg or parkinson and xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine and is for anxiety. Requip is non addictive may build up tolerance after a long time. Should always taper off medications slowly if the dosage is high. It is safer that way.

Yes: Neither sinemet or Requip (ropinirole) are MAO inhibitors. Sudafed can affect blood pressure.

No guarantee it is:: Review the fda summary of trial data in the pi at: http://us.Gsk.Com/products/assets/us_requip.Pdf Requip (ropinirole) is only a treatment for some symptoms, not a cure, with no certainty of either effectiveness, or duration for those for whom it might be useful. Like most treatments, the issues are too complex; the reason for clinical trials to track relative benefits vs. Downsides. Keep looking for more.

Several : Included are nausea, drop in blood pressure, drowsiness, and an impulse disorder (gambling, hypersexuality, lack of temptation control, etc)  side effects are similar in other variations of Dopamine agonists.
