Piercing: I think you should have the piercing removed by your physician because it is likely that antibiotics will have to be started as well.

YES: I would remove the ring since it is acting as a" FOREIGN BODY". GO BACK ON ANTIBIOTICS  and STAY on them while you SOAK your ear with hot packs. Use an OTC antibacterial cream/ointment as well!

If the wound is not getting better go to a Walk In Unit which should be able to help you obtain Insurance ("Affordable" Health Care Act)

Some basics: The bump you noted is likely a over sized reaction/scar tissue due to the tissue injury caused by the piercing &amp;/or the presence of any foreign object. You can either remove it &amp; treat the area as suggested, hoping it will settle down or not. The bump may then continue to enlarge. The piercing may seal over. You can also get a 2nd opinion by a dermatologist.

my urgent care doctor told me to remove my 5-month-old lobe piercings and directed me to use mupirocin 2%. a lot of people online say to keep the jewelry in to avoid abscesses and trapped infections, so should i have kept them in?

: The proper care is one individualized to the patient and situation. Inflammation around a piercing can spread and do serious deforming damage to the ear lobe. The lobe has a limited blood flow that limits the body's ability to fight germ spread through the cartilage. Removing a foreign object (jewelry) can speed healing. Re-piercing after healing is often needed but better in the long run.

Certainlly could: It would not distort the images, but if there is enough metal involved they would not put you in the scanner due to the strong magnetic field.

Because...: "we" say this because of the severity of the complications when it goes wrong; and the potential risks of severe infection.

Not necessarily: It is not required but is a good idea. Consult a doctor with experience doing the procedure you are interested in. Ask friends who have had the procedure who they go to. A board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist are a good place to start.
