Probably not: What are you worried about removing, the Mirena (levonorgestrel) or the fibroid? You should not have to worry about removal of mirena (levonorgestrel). The small fibroid can stay put if not causing you any difficulties.

hi am looking at options for removal of a large fibroid that on the uterus approx 6cm in diameter, was told a c section is the only way, but i don't want a c section, advice much appreciated. thank you.

Fibroid: 6 cm diam.: Unsure how a "C-section" is applicable, unless you are currently pregnant.  If so, at delivery, the fibroid can be surgically removed at the same time.  Otherwise a "fibroid" of this size (about 3 inches) , us not necessary to remove unless causing pain and discomfort.  At 46, when menopause occurs, the fibroid will shrink considerably.

Go to ER: Any extreme bleeding usually means a serious problem.  Since you are sitting at a computer emailing it is doubtful that it is extreme and it may be a minor rectal tear or hemorrhoid if there is bright red blood.  You may need help with anxiety after getting the rectal bleeding under control.

Unlikely infection: If you had this 6 mos ago infection would have appeared long before this time and be manifest by fevers, discharge, pain, etc.  If you are having bleeding, please go see your ob/gyn and be reexamined.

Surgery or not: Treatment is usually surgical if the fibroids are causing problems with pain, bleeding or infertility.  If there are no symptoms, they can be watched.  Many women have fibroids and have no symptoms.

Benign tumors: Uterine fibroids are benign muscle tumors of the uterine wall.  They are 99.9% benign.  They are quite common.  Their cause is unknown.  They are dependent on estrogen and shrink after menopause.   They can cause problems based on size, bleeding, pain, or any combination of the 3.  There may be no symptoms at all.  There is no medication for them.  Treatment is not usually necessary if small.
