Diabetes, or conditions where blood sugar is very high, can overwhelm the kidney's ability to reabsorb glucose, causing it to spill out into the urine, a condition called glycosuria. Though diabetes is the most common cause, rare defects in kidney function can cause this as well.

Rarely, glycosuria is due to an intrinsic problem with glucose reabsorption within the kidneys-Fanconi syndrome, producingrenal glycosuria. It leads to excessive water loss into the urine with  dehydration.
