i have a mirena iud but i'm constantly hearing about pregnancy's still happening with them. is that the .o1 percent reporting? do i always need backu?

Mirena failure rate: "The failure rate of Mirena is approximately 0.2% in the first year and the cumulative failure rate is 0.7% after 5 years."  Please see:  https://www.mirena-us.com/q-and-a/      Most women don't feel the need to use backup with Mirena.  Although nothing is absolutely 100%  effective - Mirena is really pretty dog-gone effective.  In answere to your question - You don't need to use backup.

i have a copper iud and screws in my foot. i hear you can't use cavitation/rf with these. is it safe to use on thighs and buttocks as long as it's not directly over the uterus area? i have seen mixed reports on this?

im so scared. im finally going to have a mirena iud put in due to heavy periods despite polypectomy hysteroscopy d and c. had two endometrial biopsies and saline sonogram. im hearing such horror stories but i cant sustain heavy periods each minth?

Heavy periods ?'s: Polyp formation, leading to surgical treatments (d&amp;c, hysteroscopy, endo bx's) will be greatly lessened if use of oral bcp's is started, (given no contraindications).  If conditions do not improve, consider hysterectomy as last resort, and get a second opinion. Ask your GYN about bcp's , and make sure you maintain punctual use (active pills w/in one hour of previous days pill).

do iuds cause spontaneous abortions?

Possible: If you're pregnant with an iud in place it's recommended to remove it asap due to risks of miscarriage or septic abortion. Having an iud removed and then conceiving does not increase the miscarriage rate. I hope that helps.

Hormone vs no hormon: Hormone-iud such as Mirena (levonorgestrel) is designed to slowly/steadily release a tiny amount of hormone during the intended period--about 3 yrs. Non-hormone iud: paragard is made of copper and works by creating a sterile inflammation thus preventing implantation. This iud can be used for up to 10 yrs. If you are considering such, consult doc. what is the experience usually like when iuds are expelled? i don't understand how so many women don't even notice it.

Look in the toilet: Expulsion can be cramys or not. Some woman don't notice  it coming out with menstrual flow into the toilet.

can you tell me, are women with iuds more prone to infections?

Probably not...: ...at least not serious infections. When IUDs were new, they seemed to predispose to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID, fallopian tube infection). It turned out this was a problem for just one type, the Dalkon Shield, no longer on the market. IUDs today rarely cause serious infections. But to be safe, if a vaginal infection, STD, etc is present, insertion is delayed until cured.

: IUD's with "hormonal content" will assist in making the device more certain in prevention of pregnancy, but the local effects of hormone content are too low to have significan systemic effects via blood content.

are copper iuds safe for wilson's disease patients?

Accepted Answer

Unknown: Speak with your wilson's specialist first. Then it might be best to have patch testing with an allergist to see if you react to the copper. Very likely it is safe, but there are other alternatives.....Why take the chance?
