See below: Not all red areas in the back of the mouth are painful, but many are, thus the name - sore throat.   Depending on what these areas look like can often help to determine if this is viral or bacterial like strep throat.  Seeing your doctor can help to figure this out.

Very likely: The chance that the bacteria that are in your sinuses will run down the back of your tongue and give you sores is very likely. You really could have diagnosed it yourself.  These sore spots could also originate because you are sick. Other bad bacteria or viruses were just hanging out until they saw an opening.  I encourage you let someone with a light and a tongue depressor diagnose it.

Sores: It has to be diagnosed clinically. If it is viral, palliative treatment for about ten days. If systemic, corticosteroid might be used.
