Don't run: Depending on a number of factors including the surgical approach used, whether the leg was lengthened and differences among patients you can expect to have some limp for several months after hip replacement surgery.  These replacements were not made for the impact of running and i strongly advise my patients to avoid those types of impact activities which will shorten implant life.

my dad got in a serious car accident and will have to have a hip replacement, will he still be able to bike after the procedure?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Following hip replacement surgery, he should be able to return to bike riding.  Typical recovery takes 10 to 12 weeks, but by about 8 weeks he should be stable enough and comfortable enough to start pedalling. Consult his surgeon on this, but cycling on a stationary bicycle or on his current bike placed on a stand to make it a stationary one, is a good form of post-operative rehabilitation.

how soon after hip replacement can i have another surgery like liposuction? i can't have the lipo first due to emergency hip replace needed

Accepted Answer

6 months: At least 6 months. The person you want to ask that question is the orthopedic surgeon doing the hip replacement. He/she should make the call. Also, the ortho doc will probably cover you with antibiotics to prevent infection of the hip replacement. Also make sure the liposuction doc knows about the hip replacement.

Hip replacement: Ask your orthopedic surgeon who did procedure. Some restrictions occur more with posterior approach vs. The direct anterior approach.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but: Yes, but caution is advised and you are accepting that you are of course at higher risk than someone who has not has a hip replacement.  Remember and continue your hip precautions!

Walking and stairs: The muscles you want to strengthen most are those that move your hip and also stabilize the hip replacement.  Walking and stairs are the easiest things to do in the beginning.  This should not be painful but may be uncomfortable depending on how long ago the surgery was.  Standing with something to help you balance and lifting the leg to the side in a scissor like movement will help as well.

Post Op Care: Most likely yes. But none of us here can see what the post op instructions from your surgeon were or what the complications were or are to your surgery and your health.  Surgeons would never let you leave the hospital without specific post op instructions.

is titanium the best material for a hip replacement?

Accepted Answer

No: Bone loves titanium, but its wrong to think that any one metal is "best".  Titanium is a soft metal and bone can grow into titanium cementless-type porous ingrowth implants very effectivley making fixation secure.  Being soft makes it a poor bearing surface for metal-on-metal implants which use harder cobalt chrome alloys.  Different metals have different properties, but no one metal is "best".

6 - 12 weeks: Most patients have resumed normal activity at about 6 weeks but can take up to a year for a full recovery.
