how long does it take to recover from inguinal hernia surgery? im having surgery to repair an inguinal hernia. what is the recovery like? how long before i can lift and carry things again?

There : There are several different ways to repair an inguinal hernia.  A traditional repair involves an incision over the area of the hernia and the placement of a plastic mesh material to plug or cover the defect.  Alternatively, your surgeon may perform a laparoscopic hernia repair which involves making a few incisions near your navel and placing mesh in front of the hernia.  Generally, the recovery from a laparoscopic hernia repair is shorter and involves less pain.  One can usually return to regular activities within a few days to a week.  Traditional hernia repairs usually require a longer recovery (3-5 weeks) but can be performed under local anesthetic meaning the patient does not have to have a full general anesthetic.  This is beneficial for some patients who may not tolerate general anesthesia.  You should speak with your surgeon about all your options as every patient has unique conditions which may influence how the surgeon may recommend proceeding.

Variable: The timing of surgery depends on whether any pre operative evauation is necessary with other doctors, the urgency of the operation, & the surgeon's schedule.  In the us, i believe that most surgeons can schedule a hernia operation within a few weeks after initial evaluation.

Up to 6 weeks: Depending on the type of repair, it can take between 1 and 6 weeks to recover.  If you have a laparoscopic repair it can take between 1-2 weeks to recover, and if it is open, depending on the recommendations of your surgeon, it can take bewtween two and 6 weeks for full recovery

m28, had inguinal hernia surgery with prolene mesh, 45 days back. at that time my esr was 2 and now it is 31, could this be from reaction to mesh.

Very unlikely: Prolene is polypropylene, very inert and non reactive.  Elevated ESR to that level can be caused by any inflammatory condition.  You should look to another source for this lab test abnormality.

30 years ago, my son had double inguinal hernia surgery with mesh, he was 4 years old. over the years, the left side bothers him from time to time, he gets a dull ache in the area, lasts a while then gets better, what is this from? is this a concern?

: It is extremely surprising that a mesh was used for repair at that age, Generally not used in persons before puberty. Best is that he see a heneral surgeon to see if the symptoms are related to the mesh or are from another reason.

i did a open inguinal hernia surgery 4 days ago, and im trying not to laugh because it hurts,  but every time i laugh i have a sharp pain and it hurts so bad that i even scream, can this mess up my surgery?

: Moderate amt. of pain is normal after this kind of surgery. But if it is excessive pl. call your surgeon or be seen. In the meantime use dry warm heat for 10-15 minutes to the area.

i had a inguinal hernia surgery 1 month back. pain was gone in first week and i masturbated after 10 days. since then i am having throbbing pain in the groin. the pain increases when i sit for a long time.  is there a chance of it being chronic ?

: Healing usually takes 3 to 6 months, hopefully you didn't reinjure area. Won't know if its chronic till after the 6 months, maybe a year.

Hydrate/stool soften: Make sure you stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluid - about 2L per day, especially while recovering from surgery. If you are taking narcotic pain medication, you should also take a stool softener which may help, such as colace (docusate sodium). And most of all, don't worry, the poop will come out soon. If the problem gets worse, call your surgeon. Hope this helps!
