In : In general, for uncomplicated surgeries, it is recommended to wait 6-8 weeks prior to lifting anything heavier that a gallon of milk. This is because the tensile strength of a wound is relatively stable at this point. After this,  a slow return to normal pre-surgery activity should ensue.

Complication: It is not unusual for the intestines to form sticky patches (adhesions) after such an event. This can lead to variable symptoms as you describe. You may want to call the surgeon's office and schedule a followup evaluation. Evaluation can eliminate some of the more worrisome processes this could be.

when can i go back to work after having surgery for a ruptured appendix?

Accepted Answer

It depends: Every patient and every operation is a little bit different.  Also every patient's job is different.  I generally tell my patients that they can go back to work whenever they feel like it as long as there is no heavy lifting (more than 20 lbs) for 6 wks, mainly to reduce the risk of getting an incisional hernia.  Also avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you are still taking pain meds.

why do some need emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix while others only need antibiotics first?

Timing&Condition: Once appendicitis begins, the appendix will typically rupture within 2-3 days, if left untreated. If your body "band-aids" the hole closed, a smoldering infection develops best rx'd with antibiotics (+/-abscess drainage) followed by delayed appendectomy (after inflammation resolves). If the rupture is not contained (generalized peritonitis), we have no choice but to go in and remove the appendix.

Yes, usually fine: Eating eggs is totally permissible for those that do not have an appendix, if it was removed for acute appendicitis.  On rare occasion, undiagnosed intolerance or allergy to eggs can result in a misdiagnosis of appendicitis.  In this case, the symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea) will persist after appendectomy, since the allergy is in the intestinal tract.  If this is the case, see an allergist.

its almost 10 days to my laproscopic appendix surgery and i am flying after 3 days is it safe to fly?

YES: I know of no contraindications against flying after this limited surgery!
AS ALWAYS ...check it with your treating surgeon!

Missing data: How long ago was the surgery ? Is the kid home or hospitalized ? Any fever ? Have you called the treating surgeon ? You get the most from this site when you provide specific background information that will allow a reasoned response to any question. There is too much missing info here to be precise but it doesn't sound normal, You need to call the treating doc.

No: Not unless your calorie expenditures exceed your calorie intake for a prolonged period of time.

Accepted Answer

Serious condition: This requires more or ouch evaluation. You could have a partial bowel obstruction due to previous abdominal surgery but in all likelihood, this is not directly related to the appendectomy. It sounds as of you may have a malabsorption syndrome or possible disease effecting the bile duct, pancreas or gallbladder. Discuss with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist.

pain around the penis area 2 weeks after appendix surgery ! is this normal ?

Accepted Answer

Not usually: Penile pain after an appendectomy is not common.  If you had a Foley catheter during the procedure, you may have some irritation from that .  A urinary tract infection is also a possibility.  I would recommend a visit with your doctor for a urinalysis.
