my 7 yo son constantly sniffs, clears his throat and mouth stretches. we have tried allergy meds to no avail. he does it so much his throat is raw?

Accepted Answer

Possible Tic: It is possible that this is unrelated to allergies.  He may have developed a tic.  If so, then this will often resolve on its own.  Drawing it to his attention can make it last longer.  This is just a thought based on his symptoms.   I would have him evaluated by his physician.

my throat is raw and dry, red, and the tonsils are white. but not white spots. could it just be allergies? my body isn't hurting and there is no fever

Possible allergy: Allergies can cause post-nasal drip which can irritate the throat.  Some allergens can directly irritate the throat.  You may also have a mild viral infection.  If you develop pain, fever, worsening symptoms or if you do not improve over the next 2-3 days, you should get checked out by a medical provider.

inside of my nose is peeling, raw and very itchy. back of throat itches as well. could this be from allergies?

Very likely: Allergies can directly affect the nose and throat with itching and burning.  Nasal drainage can also aggravate throat symptoms.  Try otc like allegra, claritin, zyrtec, benadryl (diphenhydramine).

my symptoms: very red throat, postnasal drip, feels like a lump in my throat when swallowing. no strep, no fever. i don't have allergies that i know of but dr said allergies (?) can allergies give me such a red throat? it's very raw. cbc good?

: Most non-strep sore throats are triggered by viruses (like mono) bur can be triggered by irritants (Dust/allergies/dry air/inhaling fumes/etc.). Strep is one of the only causes that would benefit from antibiotics. The other are treated with comfort measures.

Throat allergy: Please be more specific. Is it itchy, tingly and scratchy after certain foods? Or is it itch and drainage with allergies?

Possibly: One clears the throat because of irritation. The question then becomes what is the irritation.Post nasal drip from allergies or sinus disease could be the cause. Heartburn can sometimes cause this as well. In some, throat clearing can become a habit.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: The mucus from allergies is typically clear and watery or it can be mucous.   White patches in the throat may be related to overgrowth of fungi called thrush or possibly bacterial infection (like strep) or viral infection (like mono).  These last 2 will usually be accompanied by sore throat, fever, headache, fatigue, etc.  Thrush many times is not accompanied by significant symptoms.

i have an allergy to onions where the fumes from them make my throat close up is this common and what do i do?

Accepted Answer

Avoidance: This is not an allergic reaction; it is an intolerance. There is nothing you can do  to treat this. What i usually do when chopping onions is do it outside on the patio, when there is a breeze that prevents me from having to inhale the fumes.
