It is with pill only: Radioactive pill contains  i-131 isotope containing radioactive iodine. Iodine is only needed by thyroid gland no other organs uses iodine.So once you swallow  i-131 pill radioactive isotope labelled iodine absorbed from stomach and intestine and from blood it is trapped by thyroid gland to its maximum capacity and res is excreted by kidney into urine., and that is reason pt. Has to flush toilet

Thyroid and weight: You  should be on thyroid replacement and your thyroid blood levels should be normal.  However, if you have been hyperthyroid for a while, you may have become used to the high metabolism from the hyperthyroid state.  Now that your metabolism is back to normal, you have to readjust and count calories very carefully.

Yes , but: Radioactive iodine is excreted in all body fluids including sweat, in other words your sweat will be radioactive!  so when you get the dose ask for specifics regarding radiation safety.

Don&#x27;t take it: on your own way, thyroid hormone exact dose need to be regulated with physician supervision  need blood levels , too much or too little will harm you . Before synthetic ( synthroid (thyroxine) )  armour or dedicated thyroid is only source ( pigs thyroid )  Synthetic is more easy to regulate , exact amount could be administered , better absorbed . It is up to you which one you want

Some Meds, Iodine: Please follow the rules provided by the nuclear medicine/radiology department or imaging center exactly!  it is very important.  Ask them any ?'s you have.

External sources of iodine in the diet can affect the test - for example, seaweed with sushi.  Thyroid hormone and antithyroid medications can also affect the results.

You want an accurate test, not one confused by these outside influences.

Essentially yes: Iodine is particularly concentrated in the thyroid gland as it is a vital component of thyroid hormone.  The radioactivity destroys the cells it is absorbed into as well as some of the surrounding tissue.  Some may have a small degree of residual gland function after radioactive iodine, but the intent is to essentially destroy the gland.

Improvement: Radiation treatment is designed to render non-functional the hormone producing cells of the thyroid in cases of overactivity.  You can expect to have an improvement in your symptoms and a feeling of well being.  You probably will need to supplement your body with thyroid hormone to replace the loss from these cells that no longer work.

Not really.: The half-life of the tc99m used in most scans is such that you are radiation free in 24hrs.  Also, the amount used is very small.  Don't worry.
