Unlikely: Rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of the infected animal. It is unlikely that one would get rabies from a rabid raccoon scratch, unless the raccoon just licked his paws prior to scratching the person. Because rabies is a fatal disease, scratch victims should be evaluated by their doctors, and may end up getting vaccines just to be extra safe.

Contact local author: Rabies information/risk is a regional issue. State &amp; local health departments keep track of all reports of infected animals of various sorts. They could know if it is even an issue in your location, as well as assess your risk for  such an exposure. Not to worry: Rabies is rare to begin with.  It is not carried on the skin, paws or nails.  The most common source is the saliva from an infected animal.  If your puppy has been healthy and has not had any aggressive contact with a rabid animal, there is nothing to worry about.

None. : Rabies is a virus which is transmitted from infected animals, usually but not only, dogs - by bites or licking of wounds. So u cannot get that from a  metal piece in ur garden. You may be thinking of Tetanus which is more likely in the scenario u described and u shd make sure you are up to date with your tetanus shots which in adults is once every ten years.

Locate the cat: Cats, dogs and ferrets are the 3 animals that we know we can monitor them for 10 days - and if they are 'fine' after a bite or a scratch, then you won't get rabies. The problem is, cats CAN be instrumental in propagating disease - so I would take this seriously. About 1 in 1000 rabies cases is from a scratch, so the odds are low - but I would still see a doc about this for more info.

Cat scratches: Cat and other animal scratches are capable of transmitting rabies in very rare circumstances.  It is wise to observe the animal for 10 days after the scratching or biting incident.  Fortunately rabies is quite rare in the US, so it depends on where this occurred and how.  Definitely you should talk more with a doctor about this.  Luckily with rabies there is time for action - so please see an MD.
