Not sure: There have not been any controlled studies of this medication past continuous use for 12 months. If you take it for acid reflux the fda has only approved its use for 4 weeks as a short term treatment. For ulcers, treatment can be up to 16 weeks. Long term effects may include swelling in the limbs, liver damage, muscle and joint aches, thyroid dysfunction, bone fractures, and blood disorders.

Yes: Avoid caffeine, chocolate , peppermint, spicy meals, tight clothing, obesity, smoking. . Stay upright for 2 hours after eating. If not better after 4 weeks, see doctor.

Known cause: Trileptal is a known cause of low sodium. Initially low sodium can have very subtle signs like fatigue or gait instability, but later it can progress to more serious symptoms. Talk to your nephrologist about ways to help you get your sodium level up.

Other choices: Neurontin, lyrica, (pregabalin) cymbalta, gralise, baclofen, perhaps topamax or lamotrigine.  Consider a relatively non-invasive needle directed balloon foramenal decompression by a neurosurgeon.

Not sodium: Sodium high or low will not help you lose weight. The issue is sugar or carbohydrates and the total amount of calories you are consuming. Sodium varies widely and is of no consequence in the scenario you describe.

Sulfa allergy?: Not all sulfas cross react. Sulfa antibiotics do not cross react with most other sulfa drugs. Of course you could develop a second allergy though it is unlikely.

Low sodium: The incidence of low-sodium with tegretol is significantly lower then the incidence of low-sodium with trileptal.(na+ ≪134 meq/l) was 29.9% among oxc-treated patients and 13.5% among cbz-treated patients (p &lt; 0.0001).
