strep throat getting worse after 2 type of abx. initially started to improve, but by day 4 started getting worse - pus on throat & infected lymph node?

Accepted Answer

Not good: Some people do not absorb oral antibiotics very well. You may need to get some shots of antibiotic, IV doses. May also need to make sure you don't have mono at your age. This can cause false positives with some strep tests and would not get better with antibiotics. Especially with "pus" and "infected lymph node" this is a consideration.

have mono. white pus in throat went away two days ago and now i see that it returned today. what could be the cause of this? lack of rest? water?

Decreased feeding: The back of the throat and tonsils require the mechanical action of feeding to help strip mucous and old skin accumulation off these surfaces.Limited oral intake and or lack of roughage in the diet can lead to increased accumulations on these structures. Try to stay hydrated and keep up with your energy needs and don't dwell over the appearance of your tonsils.It may be weeks before they improve.

throat has been sore today,one tonsil has pus on it with blood around the pus . my throat is also red around that tonsil. could this be tonsillitis?

See a doctor: You probably need antibiotics and your doctor will correctly diagnose and treat you.  Drink plenty of fluids and take all the medication prescribed as well as gargle.  Hope you feel better soon.

tonsillitis in october, no abscess & treated with penicillin v. ever since, time to time i can taste pus in throat along with thickened mucus at back of nose/throat. no pain only bad taste of pus. had peritonsilar abscess 2 yr ago so i remember taste?

: It is unusual or impossible to have tonsillar abscess with pus and you do not have other symptoms such as fever, sore throat, pain with swallowing, etc. Your symptoms are more consistent with post nasal drip from sinus problem.

Need more info: A simple throat culture and or nose swab can easily detect significant bacteria to help differentiate the symptoms. Please consult with your family physician, .

Need eval.: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician ; get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

how does my daughter get tonsillitis with pus in her throat when she had then out?

Some Tonsils left.: When a tonsillectomy is performed, the surgeon has to determine where to limit the tonsillectomy as the tonsils transition to the lingual tonsils at the base of your tongue. Therefore, there can be some tonsils left or this is an inflammation of her lingual tonsils.

Lymphoid hyperplasia: Red globules on the back of the throat are enlarged lymph follicles and are usually caused by chronic irritation from post nasal drip or irritation from chronic relux.  Appearance of the throat may look like cobblestone, and is often referred to by that name.  Your PCP can evaulate, or ENT or Allergist can assess sinuses and GI for reflux.  Smoking of any kind is an irritant and can cause this too

i have been on amoxicillin since monday night. i have severe strep throat (pus on tonsils) i keep feeling worse. when should i expect the meds to work?

Accepted Answer

Usually the: antibiotic starts to work for strep within 24 hours. However, if you have a concurrent viral illness, the antibiotic won't help and you will have to heal on your own. If you are continuing to worsen or are not better, I would recommend that you call your own doctor. They may want to see you again to make sure you don't have an abscess or mono.
