i m having pain on my upper back on the left side under my last rib. it is dull and pulsates at times. it feels like a deep pain not a bad muscle pain?

Hard to say: There are multiple potential causes, you should consider being seen.  Possible causes can incude an irritation of a nerve in the thoracic spine, an inflammatory condition involving the pancreas or the lining of the lung, and multiple other causes. Pulsations: Those pulsations if synchronous with your heart beat or pulse may be the aorta which is the largest artery in your body and runs through your torso and up against the spine. If the pulsation are very prominent, I recommend that you be evaluated by a physician for high blood pressure and a thoracic aneurysm but I wouldn't be surprised if no serious problems are present at your age.

Trigger point: it can cause by trigger point which is  an inflame band of muscle fibers , need physical therapy using muscle stimulus , heat modalities and exercise  , if persist , see cardiologist

: You should investigate the cause of your bad upper back pain. Nerve root pain by a bulging intervertebral disc or bone spur can cause jabbing, sharp pains or a steady ache. See your MD,an orthopedic specialist or visit a spine clinic to start the workup which will most likely include  xrays and/ or an MRI of the thoracic spine.

Try following a bland,low fat diet,avoid alcohol,caffeine,nicotine, aspirin,nsaids(ibuprofen,naproxen), take a medication like nexium or zantac. If symptoms persist,I recommend consulting a gastroenterologist for diagnosis and treatment.

 to  shoulder or abdomen.Worse when cough
 sneeze, or suddenly move.May ease with holding breath or pressing painful area. Costochondritis or inflammation of anterior rib endings sometimes can mimic pleuritis.

Muscle spasm : When the body center of gravity is off center due to pelvic girdle instability, the body tower tilts.  Upper body muscles are exposed to extra burden of holding upper body centrally.  The muscles of the upper back inherit this job.  Over time they become spastic.  Pain is often found at the top of the shoulder blade and at the medial border of the scapula, where the rhomboid muscles attach.
