Prozac (fluoxetine) and Elavil: Prozac (fluoxetine) can raise Elavil levels into dangerously ranges. They may be used together, but it would be necessary to start very slowly at a very low dose, follow blood levels closely and gradual raise it to a therapeutic range.

: It is not advised to add another antidepressant to Elavil (Nortriptyline) due to the increased risk of Serotonin Syndrome, sedation, or confusion, esp at your age. A few options: (1) switch to Lyrica (recommended); (2) switch to Neurontin; or (3) reduce Elavil dose to 10 mg.

Agree with you: You have already had adverse effects from medications far less toxic than Elavil, (amitriptyline) which has substantial anti-cholinergic problems.  Sounds like you may benefit from a second opinion regarding all of this.

If that is the case you should talk to your doctor about changing the antidepressant before adding a new medication to address side effects. If you are prone to headaches, amitriptyline is a good option to decrease the amount of headaches. However, it is also an antidepressant and could cover both problems
