Weeks: A very common injury. One I have had myself. Very painful as you know, particularly when sitting down. In my experience, this takes 2-4 weeks to resolve. Heat and anti-inflammatories can help take the edge off.

Generally the cause: Is a fracture of the coccyx, from a fall or an accident, which usually resolves with time, but might take 3-4 years. Some pts require surgery to take the broken part of the bone out, if the pain continues.
Xrays/ct scans might be needed to DX the problem, to see if there any other cause of the pain.
See your pcp and then an ortho referral would be needed as well.

Yes: Depends on what "damaged" means, but a fractured coccyx should heal, unless there is significant displacement, or associated medical conditions which prevent healing.  If you are having persistent pain at your coccyx, your doctor can check x-rays and other imaging studies to assess the underlying anatomy.

Bowel movementsand straining are often painful. 

Some women may experience pain during sexual intercourse.
