i've been on prophylactic antibiotics for recurrent uti. should i take probiotics?

I would: I'm a big fan of probiotics.  Antibiotics are definitely important when you need them, but when women (or men) reach the point of needing them for chronic condition, it's better to figure out what the trigger is so you don't have to expose your body to long term antibiotic use.  Probiotics can help with that, as can other diet and lifestyle changes. Plenty of books on this at library and store!

i have never gotten utis, but this past year i get them almost every other month. only symptom is strong smelling urine. culture comes back negative, but antibiotics cure the smell. what could be cause them to reoccur ?

: The culture of organisms from infected urine is not 100% accurate, and the methods to preserve culture speciments as well as the possibility of anaerobic organisms which specimens are not adequately protected from oxygen exposure, can contribute to "negative" cultures.  There are other causes for strong smelling urine, like dehydration, when there is no infection.

Yes no : First thing you do is to drink plenty of fluids. It may help your symptoms of uti. You need to see a doctor to make sure that you do have UTI by having a urine culture done , if the urine culture  is positive then you must take antebiotics  however in many cases there are symptoms of UTI but the culture is negative then you don't have to take any antibiotics.

Use antibiotics: I am sure that every UTI throughout history was not treated with antibiotics and somehow we survive. The risk of not treating is substantial as kidneys can be damaged permanently or infection can spread to the blood making us critically ill. Cranberry juice and increased fluids may help but get on antibiotics when you really need them, like with a uti.

UTI: Fluids, mostly water, avoid caffeine, spicy foods, take cranberry tablets, good perineal hygiene.

Subjective answer: The "best" antibiotic(abx) is often a matter of taste. Usually abx are prescribed without a urine culture result that helps narrow down the bacteria (out of millions) causing the UTI. Without urine sensitivity results, the most effective abx against that bacteria is unknown. Ideally, the abx will be effective against the bacteria &amp; cause no side effects. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is cheap but not always effective.

See below: The most important course of action is make sure the diagnosis of UTI is correct by obtaining both a urinalysis and urine culture (C/S). The latter will verify if a UTI is still present, identify the specific bacteria, and identify which antibiotics it is sensitive to. There are other conditions which can mimic a UTI. If recurrent UTI, further testing and long-term antibiotics may be necessary.

Same as females:: Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds; cipro; sometimes penicillin (if culture result known); keflex. Others sometimes used. All depend on resistance patterns of organisms in your region.

i would advise you that there is little for uti's other than antibiotics.  I am sure you are hydrating well and taking cranberry juice already?

But, the sooner you get this treated the sooner you will feel better.
