Need exam: There are a number of causes for a lump on the toe. Without examining the toe it's impossible to give advice.
For this type of complaint you need to see a physician or podiatrist.

You may have: Anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome which is a nerve compression of the deep peroneal nerve on the top of the foot. Or a radiculopathy from your back.

A corn is a : Symptom of some sort of structural problem, usually a hammertoe. Any treatment to the corn will only be temporary unless the underlying structural problem is fixed. This usually means surgery. If cutting the corn down (don't do this yourself) keeps you comfortable for a long time, there is no need to rush into surgery as long as you understand cutting the corn is not a cure.

Nerve related: if you do not have any sores on your toe and it is most likely nerve irritation this could be from local nerve irritation or possibly a neuroma or even from higher up at the ankle or even in the low back area. If anti-inflammatories do not help in a couple of days then it is reasonable to get checked by a medical professional.

Have it checked out: Very possibly you injured, even fractured, your toe and now are altering your gait to avoid pain. This can lead to all kinds of problems. It can throw your entire lower extremity alignment out of place (hips, knees, ankles, feet) and lead to complicated, chronic problems. Make an appointment with a Podiatrist or Orthopedic foot specialist for x-rays and expert evaluation. Good wishes:)

Morton's neuroma: More often than not this is caused by a compression of one of the intermetatarsal sensory nerves. The nerve swells, becomes surrounded by scar tissue and can either hurt, go numb, tingle, burn or all of these symptoms may occur.

Genetic Makeup: This is the result of your unique genetic makeup; some people have a longer one, some a shorter, and some the same length as the big toe. Pad the corn: First of all, the pain from a corn can be managed with corn pads. I always recommend non-medicated pads because the acid can cause problems. If the corn itself is painful, a podiatrist can pare it down and relieve the pain.  There are also splints to straighten hammertoes. There is also surgery to correct hammertoes. Visit your podiatrist to see what is the best treatment for you.
