Attention seeking: I think sometimes the dynamics in the family are such that when one individual is getting attention (either good, bad, intentional or not), that a loved one or another family member may feel left out in some way. I don't particualarly think that this is a "condition" but is more likely a way of trying to reach out for his or her own attention.

How old?: I think it's important to acknowledge your child's fears, not dismiss them. Have your child help problem solve about facing their fear. If they tell you that shooing away monsters will help, then it's fine to do that. If you tell them monsters are not real you should also be telling them santa claus, the tooth fairy, etc are not real.
