Timing: You must make it part of your daily routine, not when you "have time"  just like taking a shower (as you should), brushing your hair, shaving, what ever.  You must make it part of your routine.  First thing in the moring (or after breakfast) and last thing before bed will the best times.  If you can watch commercials on tv you have time to brush.  See your dentist for more info.

Independence: Don't you just love it when your toddler decides to be independent? View it with some amusement, then brush his teeth anyways. There are some things they get to control, and some they don't. If he won't brush his teeth on his own, then you can "aid" him in completing the task. He'll fight you i'm sure, but after awhile will give in when the routine is repeated.

Changes: Toddlers frequently get upset over transitions, even ones that they have had before. Pick your battles. Offer her the tooth brush and make it a game. Talk about it when it isn't an issue. Give her choices where you can- let her choose what color toothbrush..  Avoid making it into a big fight- if nothing else works, wipe her teeth with a washcloth until she gets through this.

Similar: I have patients that get great results with both techniqes.  The most important aspect of brushing is to do it 3 times daily.  If you have a dexterity problem the electric brush may help you reach difficult areas.  Some patients prefer to use a higher tech device; and get better results because of their higher compliance rate.

I can't answer that: Age alone has nothing to do with the loss of teeth. Therefore i can't give you the answer that you are looking for.  I have many patients in their 70's and 80's with almost all of their natural teeth.  I also have many in their 50's with many missing teeth.  Loss of teeth is related to proper home care, the proper diet, routine dental checkups and quality dentistry throughout your lifetime.

Use smaller brush: Try using a smaller headed toothbrush since this shouldn't impinge on your soft palate as much.  If this works, you might then switch to a sonic toothbrush with a small head.  You don't have to move this brush back and forth to get the teeth clean: the bristles vibrate to clean the teeth.
