Depends: A premi baby who has good potential & does not have complicated brain bleeds or other troublesome issues in the neonatal nursery can do well. One of my smallest patients who weighed in at under a pound at birth started baylor at 17 and graduated from their honors program.Like anything else there is a range of possibilities for each patient.

My interpretation: I don't think those computer generated measurements have any clinical meaning and i don't use them. If some other doctor on healthtap cares to disagree, please do! a minimal hr of 50 is completely normal.

Accepted Answer

No - but higher risk: A history of a previous preterm birth increases risk for recurrence (around 25% chance depending on cause).  There are some possible interventions to reduce recurrence risk depending on the cause of your preterm birth and loss.  You should speak with your ob/gyn even before attempting a future pregnancy to see what interventions are possible in your case and to better prepare your for pregnancy.

Rare: 0.2 - 0.4% of all babies born in the us.  The more premature the baby, the higher the likelihood.

Yes: Babies with retinopathy of prematurity (rop) have a good chance of seeing in societies where advanced medical care exists. About 500 children per year in the us are reported to develop blindness due to rop. Ongoing follow up for babies with rop is important because other vision issues can also occur in these children over time.
