does prematurity affect final adult height?

Pediatric Endocrinology 21 years experience
It may : If child is born small for gestational age (sga), there is a risk of premature puberty (particularly girls) which in turn can compromise final adult height. Good question !
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Maybe/maybe not: Prematurity is a broad category with survivors occasionally as early as 24 weeks up to more common 36-37. The smaller/earlier the baby the more likely they had or have predisposing factors that may limit final height. The less time in the neonatal ICU and less complications with their care, the less it will alter achieving their genetic potential.

Is it true that long length at birth is an indicator of height later in life?

Dr. Nanette Nuessle

No: Babies are born to fit their mothers womb. This has nothing to do with their final height. Their final height has to do with their genetics and diet. Height at birth can also be affected by mother's diet during pregnancy and whether or not she smoked during the pregnancy. These things can make the baby shorter at birth.

Stay Healthy!: The best one can do is make sure to be eating healthy, get quality sleep and exercise. The rest is genetics, provided a chronic illness or the like doesn't interfere, which would be very unusual.
