Symptoms are very important and should be highly correlated with testing.

If you have pof, you should consult your gyn because it can sometimes be associated with other endocrine disorders.

You have to wait: If menopause occurs before age 40 it is called premature. Unfortunately, blood test are not an accurate predictor of menopause until it has already gone pretty far. You can skip a period or even periods and the tests can be suggestive of menopause and then the periods can resume for months or even years.

Unlkely: If mood changes are your only symptom, it is unlikely premature menopause.  Real premature menopause occurring in someone under 40 is rare, especially if your cycles are still somewhat regular.

Depends on your age: Depends on your age and the cause of premature menopause. All women with early menopause are at higher risk of bone loss (osteoporosis). If  you're 35 or under your md will get a genetic test (karyotype), if this shows turner syndrome you may have heart problems. If you have fragile x syndrome it can cause neurological problems. Rarely, premature menopause occurs with adrenal gland insufficiency.

Need more info: At age 48, if you are going through menopause (defined as no period for 12 months), then this is not considered premature menopause.  It would be completely normal, though earlier than the average.  Check with your doctor if you are confused.  It is hard to provide a better answer without more information.
