See Pedi Urologist: Bilat hydronephrosis can indicate several different problems.  You should involve a pediatric urologist promptly.  In the male fetus, this can indicate posterior urethral valves which needs to be addressed immediately upon delivery.  It could also indicate bilateral vesico-ureteral reflux or obstruction where the kidneys drain into the ureters (upj-obstruction)  either way, see peds uro stat.

Need more info: Is hydronephrosis (hn) new since onset of pregnancy? How severe is the hn? Hn during pregnancy is quite common due to combination of estrogen effect & enlarged urerus which can obstruct ureters. Settles down on its own after pregnancy, most cases. Symptomatic hn during pregnancy requires intervention, by a urologist or an interventionist, to decompress obstructed kidney/s. Discuss with your OB dr.

See the Urologist: Hydronephrosis of Pregnancy is common. On the Rt side more common.  Possible stone. Ultrasound could help.  You may have to have a stent if pain too severe.  Try to hold out if you can.  Later have Urology check for little known Rt ovarian syndrome. Which can cause this Rt side only hydro.  This may require surgery later if you plan more babies.  Check on syndrome.  We wrote about it years ago.

how would you treat a pregnant woman of 18 weeks with sever painless hydronephrosis on her left kidney? would you let it go untreated being watched? or would you perform a percutaneous nephrostomy? or what else? thanks!

Not from  pregnancy: U r probably seeing an OB dr.. Best consult with experienced urologist. Management depends upon presence and thickness of kidney cortex (functional part of kidney), may require a temporary percutaneous jj tube between bladder & kidney or nephrostomy tube (placed thru posterior abdominal wall, best by interventional radiologist) for duration of pregnancy.  Need BUN & creatinine checked now.

what does the pain of hydronephrosis feel like? i think i am finally feeling the pain.  it feels like my kidney  is being twisted. it happens when i inhale deeply or turn on my sides. i am 12 weeks pregnant.

Need to see your MD: You may have  urinary infection  which is more likely in the kidney, to attribute your symptoms, you may not have obstruction (which causes hydro.. ) is less likely. See your doctor for exam, urine culture, sonogram and possible rx antibiotics.

Call your doctor: Those symptoms can go along with an infection in bladder or kidney.  That can be serious in pregnancy. Call your doctor.

dec 2011 i overdosed on 17 aleve (naproxen) pills. i got pregnant in july 2012 and i got hydronephrosis in my left kidney. symptoms were gross hematuria on august 2012. could the pills have caused this?

Hydronephrosis: It is unlikely that the aleve (naproxen) effect on kidneys would result in a delayed hydronephrosis.

Consult urologist: Also your ob. Hydronephrosis 2 weeks after conception must have been there feore conceiving. Bright red blood in urine is either due to a UTI which needs to be treated or could be related to the hydronephrosis. Working 9 hours/day when pregnant is also probably too much. Something only you & your employer can take care of. Good luck.

what is unilateral hydronephrosis?

Retained urine: Results in kidney swelling, most commonly due to obstruction between the kidney pelvis (urine funnel) and ureter which drains urine into bladder (uretero-pelvis junction obstruction), less commonly due to obstruction at bladder end of ureter or bladder reflux, in both cases ureter will will also be swollen. Unilateral means that hydronephrosis is only present on one side.
