Pregnancy &amp; Flu: You will want to go to your OB and insure that you don't actually have influenza (the true flu) because that can be very dangerous in pregnancy and must be taken seriously.  If though, you are having a viral infection with congestion, sore throat, etc. as a general rule most over the counter cold medications without Ibuprofen or Aspirin are ok.  Your OB should have a list of safe meds for colds.

Sure: Why not let your doctor take a look at you and suggest whether or not you may need some form of treatment.  It is not likely that there is much they will do for you or your baby, but always helps to have a knowledgeable person examine and suggest.  Good luck.

See your doctor: Flu is extremely dangerous for pregnant women regardless of gestational age.  If you think you have symptoms of the flu or have had contact with someone with the flu, you should see your doctor immediately.  Tamiflu (oseltamivir) can be prescribed for flu.

i am 12 weeks pregnant and have the flu since yesterday. i have a fever of 38.4 degrees. should i go to the hospital or try yo bring it down? how can i bring it down?

Tamiflu discuss: It is important that your oxygen level be maintained during this illness. I would recommend a visit with your family physician. Tamiflu may be indicated, but please verify if you can take it. It should be given during the first 48 hours to be most effective.

Tylenol: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is, generally, considered safe in pregnancy mainly for minor aches/pain and fever.  Medications like Zyrtec can also help with allergy symptoms.

Hope its not Flu: You don't say why you believe you have influenza but hopefully you just have a typical viral upper respiratory infection. The flu virus can affect the baby. In either case the virus runs its course in 10 days . Persistent cough after that is likely due to a secondary bacterial infection that can be treated with antibiotics. See an obstetrician and ask about flu vaccine assuming this wasn't flu.

im 24 weeks pregnant and i have the flu can i take  alka-seltzer plus?

Accepted Answer

NO: Alka-seltzer contains Aspirin which should not be used in pregnancy.  There are some older forms of alka-seltzer that may not contain Aspirin (acetysalicilic acid) which may be ok.  You would be best using a tylenol (acetaminophen) flu type produce as acetominophen is safe to use in pregnancy.
