A test gives a reliable result by 3 weeks after sex (by 3 weeks after when conception might have happened), or 1 week after missing a period. If done sooner, a negative result may be due to testing too early such as less than 2 weeks after sex.

Missed period: Missed period is not just caused by pregnancy, although, pregnancy is the most common cause of missed period in women of fertile age. A lot of women fail to ovulate and that causes them not to have a period that month. They either get it back next month or they go without one for a while until they start bleeding uncontrollably when the uterus line grows big enough to just slough off on its own.

See below: If you did the test correctly and it was negative at 9 days after a missed period, you are unlikely to be pregnant. You may wish to repeat the test in 3-4 days. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully.
If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Unlikely: Many on BC will see a lessening or loss of menses over time. A urine pregnancy test would be positive by 3 wks after conception as this creates chemicals that would turn up in the urine. You may want to call the docs office nurse &amp; discuss your concerns.

As : As doctors, anytime a fertile, sexually active woman has an abnormally light or missed period, the first thing we do is rule out pregnancy.  You can either take a home pregnancy test as long as it has been 5 to 6 weeks since your last normal period, or you can go see your doctor or a planned parenthood in your area and they can test you even earlier. Other than taking a pregnancy test, there's no way to know whether you are pregnant or not. It is always better to be safe than sorry and to know sooner rather than later.  Whether you are pregnant or not, if you are having sex and do not want to be a parent yet, you should talk to a healthcare provider about birth control.  In the meantime, you need to use condoms every time you have sex.  "pulling out" is not an effective method since there are sperm released before your boyfriend has an orgams which can get you pregnant.
