Good to do the tests: Preeclampsia is usually diagnosed by elevated BP and protein in the urine. A 24-hour urine collection is important for the determination of how much protein is present. Spot check of protein is unreliable - could be contamination or a sign of mild infection. 

You will know what is happening after getting the test results.

Be sure to report severe headaches, abd pain, and/or vision changes.

Pre eclampsia causes: Pre Eclampsia is not caused by high protein in urine.But Pre Eclampsis causes High Protein in urine.It is a complication of pregnancy.
It is not caused by eating too much protein in any form

Post-eclampsia Elert: Usually signs of preaclampsia disappear 1-2 wks after birth. If you have symptoms persisting beyond delivery, it would be called post aclampsia, which should be viewed seriously for potential of complications such as hypertension, seizures and kidney disease. Besides your BP, your OB doctor may want to test your blood for platelets (for clotting ability), urine and BP and you may benefit from meds

Preeclampsia: The cut-off for protein in urine in pregnancy is 300 mg; 621 mg is a little elevated, but still below one gram, which is 1000 mg, for example. In severe cases several grams of protein can be spilled in urine. To gauge the severity of the preeclampsia or to determine if there is toxemia of pregnancy, other factors are important like blood pressure, liver enzymes, number of platelets.

due to my high level of proteinurua, my gyn says i'm at risk for preeclampsia. is there anything i can do at home to lessen the chance of developing preeclampsia? thanks

PNC/PNV/aspirin.: The only interventions proven to decrease the risk of preeclampsia are Aspirin 80 mg daily preconceptionally or by 16 weeks, calcium (i.e. Prenatal vitamins - pnv) and regular, early prenatal care (pnc). Additionally, when a woman sexually cohabitates with the same man for over 6 months she has a decreased risk for preeclampsia.
