i got the varicella vaccine on the 8th of february i took a pregnancy test today and it came out positive will it have some effect on the baby?

Doubt it: Most of the internal response to the vaccine will be finished within 21 days &amp; involves antibody production.If you were sick with fever or had a rash (some do) after the vaccine your response would be considered more intense. Although no one can say this is 100% safe for this pregnancy, even natural varicella is not known as a significant risk for defects/loss during early pregnancy.

Yes: The recommended delay is one month after the vaccine.If this has passed , it is fine to proceed.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Even though your first shot was prior to pregnancy. It is not too late to get your second varicella shot. You may take your second varicella shot after delivery. It is not contraindicated with breast feeding.

VARICELLA shot: If you had chickenpox before as a child, you are immune to varicella and no need to get another shot.

VZIG: VZIG is only intended for at risk mothers who have just been exposed to the live virus and within 96 hours of exposure, but, just being at risk because you never had chickenpox is not a reason to be treated with VZIG

: Virus in blood (only present for initial 2-3 days) is the major danger for the fetus.  To be ultra-safe, wait +/- 1 month after skin lesions clear.

Wait it out: There is variable effect of Cpx during pregnancy.The worst risk occurs if mom is infected and symptomatic around the time of labor.In this interval she and baby can both have severe complications, but they can be managed medically with good outcome. Less than 5% of those infected during early or mid pregnancy will show any effect on the baby.

Talk to your doctor: If you have had chickenpox in the past, you are probably immune and new exposure is not harmful.  If you haven't had chickenpox or had the vaccine, you may be at risk for chickenpox in pregnancy which can effect your baby.  If you are exposed, call your doctor about your immunity.

Not for most: Depending on how far along she is, there may or may not be an issue with baby. A percentage will show some skin or other skin findings at birth that appear like scars. CPX is most dangerous to both if it occurs during the days leading up to delivery or just after delivery. Severe maternal and fetal/neonatal  disease is possible.

Accepted Answer

Check with OB: Most adults have had chickenpox as children & if you did you and your baby are at no risk. If you didn't, your OB can guide you. There are some issues that arise if you have it mid pregnancy, but the worst outcome for baby occurs if they erupt with it around birth or that first week. Medication is available for those rare episodes & can be life saving.
