i've had 3 colonoscopies over the last 15 years. all negative. no polyps. non-smoker, non-drinker, normal weight. my mom died from colon cancer in 1997. smoked 20yr, avg. drinker, obese, bad diet. last screening 2016. how many years before next one?

: A negative colonoscopy is good for 10 years. 
So you  can wait but should have a repeat test in 2025/26. Of course if you have any symptoms like rectal bleeding or Anemia, that is an indication for repeating this test sooner than 10 years of gap.

No stage.: Polyps are not cancer yet.  There are many forms of polyps.  Some, like tubular adenoma and villous adenoma, need a full colonoscopy, and surgery if the polyp is too large.  Hyperplastic polyps need no treatment.  Colon cancers can arise from adenomatous polyps.

Very rare: Polyp is a premalignant condition, which means that if you let it go without removing it, it will turn into cancer. Usually takes an average of 10 years for a polyp to turn into cancer. The larger the polyp the greater the chance to have cancer, the size of 2cm could be worrisome.  It is recommended to have repeat colonoscopy 3 years after removing the polyp for surveillance.

Depends: Here size doesn't matter. It is the cell type seen by the pathologist under the microscope that is important. Hopefully yours is benign and it sounds like you were fortunate to find a smaller polyp that could be removed successfully.

Very unlikely: Detail not good enough for polyps, but if a colon cancer has obstructing signs, it may give clues on KUB, suggesting other more detailed studies, i.e. CT.

It can happen: At the time of detection, most polyps are not cancerous. Hoever, over time polyps can develop pre-cancer changes in the cells which then become early cancer changes and finally fully developed cancer. It is best to strictly follow your gastroenterologists screenig schedules if you already have had polyps and get regular screeinig colonoscopies done.

Not really: Not really the size of the polyp does not determined if it is cancer or not of course large polyp can do more damage and depend on location can cause obstruction
and bleeding the histology of the polyp determined if it is malignant or pre malignant.

About 90%: About half of the people over sixty have polyps, but only about 5% develop cancer.  The incidence of polyps and cancer vary by age.  Polyps larger than 1.0 cm are more likely to become cancerous.

No reason to be nerv: Since you are under proper medical care of a doctor who is checking your colon  regularly, you will do well. Polyps are caught early and removed safely if you get a Colonoscopy test ddone every one to 2 years for the next 5 years, then reduce the frequency as advised by your gastroenterologist.
