Variable: This could range from a simple eye pain with no findings to a traumatic hemorrhage in the eyeball that would require bed rest & possible eye surgery. Some kids will actually penetrate the eye with a foreign object that would require removal & repair.

Accepted Answer

NO: Chronic and vigorous rubbing of the eye may lead to conjunctival irritation or keratoconous but it isn't possible to poke the eye out.  Now, some psychologically disturbed patients may express self-mutilation but this is extreme.  Rubbing of the eyes is sometimes seen in small children who cannot see well.  Best to get an exam to determine the underlying cause.

: If you have sustained a forceful injury to your eye, get an exam with an eye MD in person. A hole can be made from the outside of the eye to the inside. The force necessary would vary by patient, location on the eye, sharpness of the poking object, the mass of the object, and the speed.  A blunt force trauma can tear the retina on the inside. This also varies by patient. Don't poke your eye!

Doctor ASAP: Please bring him to his pediatrian or an eye doctor asap for an evaluation.  In the mean time don't rub it or force him to open it. If he scratched the cornea he may require eye drops and/or an eye patch for a coupe of days.

Eyeball scratch: Anytime there is a break in the integrity of the skin there is the potential for an infection developing. You can get antibiotic eye drops. If your hands were just in the dirt in the ground that would be more worrisome than if you had been sitting in an easy chair reading.

Exam: If you sustained a corneal abrasion or scrape to the eye, it would be painful, watering, red, and difficult to open.  Otherwise if it resolves quickly, then probably just a minor irritation that can be helped by lubricating with artificial tear drops.

Depends: It really depends on where on the eye the nail hit and at what force.  You could have a mild abrasion, to a subconjunctival hemorrhage (essentially a bruise on the eyeball), to more severe conditions such as glaucoma (high eye pressures), cataracts (cloudy lens), and retinal detachment with permanent loss of vision.  See an eye md for an evaluation.
