my dr. rx'd triamcinolone cream 2x/day for poison ivy rash. are there any side effects or is it usually well tolerated w/out any adverse effects?

Not really: This is a moderate potency steroid cream and little if any will penetrate the skin and effect your body. It can decrease the angry irritation of the rash and reduce itching. Many use it for that purpose.You may be able to get similar benefit from a product called IVY DRY sold OTC at many box stores.

No: No - poison ivy causes only local contact irritation and will not cause long term issues or problems.  Poison ivy causes trouble by contacting the plants sap - and its not contagious.  However, people can continue to come in contact with it if you don't eradicate the plant.

Not sure: Not sure what is meant by 'poison ivy' shots. Decades ago there was a shot for 'poison ivy' but it was taken off  the market b/c of significant side effects.

Cephalexin isn't the: treatment for poison ivy, so they must be treating you for an infection, in which case i would recommend no smoking or alcohol especially while on meds!

Itchy: Itching is pretty much present in every case.  Redness and blistering are all pretty common too.  I am hoping that's what you were asking.  As far as exactly what the plant looks like there are some great pics available by searching google.

Depends: ...on how allergic you are, AND how much of the oily substance (urushiol) gets on your skin. Can be as long as 4-6 weeks. The inflammation can affect skin tone the whole summer. Steroids (oral and/or topical) can definitely help.

Wash with brown soap: This must be done right after exposure, or you can use alcohol to wash the affected area immediately.  After the rash appears, this could hurt.  Use oatmeal compress or bath for itching.  You might need to use benadryl (diphenhydramine).

Poison ivy: Poison ivy treatments are usually limited to self-care methods, and the rash typically goes away on its own within two to four weeks. In the meantime, you can use poison ivy remedies, such as oatmeal baths and cool compresses, as well as over-the-counter anti-itch medications to relieve your signs and symptoms. In severe cases topical and oral cortisone are needed.

Blisters filled with fluid that may leak out. In rare cases, some people develop blood-filled blisters that can turn black and become shiny dark spots.
