Pressure: The high pressure that is produced when air gets into pleural space is so great, that it pushes the trachea to the other side.

i had pneumonia in november and have had shortness of breath since then. my cta from 2 days ago said left base atelactasis is noted and no pe or pnemonothorax. can it be treated? my d-dimer was 0.59 and my o2 is usually 97-98?

: Stop the anxiety and make conscious efforts to take deep breadth in when you remember. If you smoke or around people that smoke you need to remove that and also cut dust and fumes. Is there family history of lung problems may be what you should look into, however it may just be scarring of the lung depending on exposure and the severity of the pneumonia that is causing prolonged period of recovery

Infection in chest: Empyema means there is infection/ pus inside chest cavity.  Unlike pneumonia which is inside lungs.  This is around the lung. Empyema may require surgical treatment.

Usually viral: Interstitial pneumonia is an infection that affect the small area in the lung tissue proper usually more spread out than consolidated to one area. Often caused by a virus.

bilateral pneumonia complicated by pleural effusion-- can this be fatal?

Probably not...: This condition is typically treated with antibiotcs and drainage of the effusion with a chest tube if it is large enough. Generally it is not fatal; however, if severe enough & not responsive to treatment, this can be very serious.
