May be: Go to see you pcp for ribs and chest x ray and take tylenol (acetaminophen) or more strong analgesic.

Pneumonia: There is that potential, but you need not have pneumonia to be coughing sufficiently severely to strain the muscles between the ribs, producing pain.  See your doctor and get evaluated.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The presence of pleural fluid indicates involvement of the pleura - inflammation there (commonly called pleurisy) can accompany pneumonia and is painful with inspiration or cough. NSAIDs, (like ibuprofen) are often very effective for this type of pain.

Eval:  Do you have any additional symptoms. COVID 19 Sx's may include fever, cough, feeling tired, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, chills, chest pain, nasal congestion, loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Pneumonia: First....finish the complete prescription of the antibiotic your on even if you feel much better.  The incentive spirometer is very very important.  It helps you open alveoli that may have been effected by the infection and filled with fluid.  Its a very good prognostic indicator of recovery.  We often do pulmonary percussive technique in the hospital with patients to help mobilize sections.

i have bad left under arm rib pain for past 5 days i was seen at hospital for pneumonia and cough  but never treated to the rib pain what could it be?

Sprained muscle: Most likely you pulled or sprained a muscle while coughing.  Some patients have been known to break ribs with a severe cough.  I assume they did X-Rays already.  I would avoid any heavy lifting with the left arm and mild pain relievers.  It should get better by itself

Rapid heart beat.: May be meds you are taking.  Keep diary on what brings this on how long it lasts and what makes it better. Show to team discuss.

It : It is not very uncommon to see patients with COPD ( chronic bronchitis or emphysema) patients getting diagnosed with pneumonia and vice versa. I will suggest you see a pulmonologist before getting labelled with any of these diagnosis.

could i have fractured a rib from coughing while i have pneumonia?

Accepted Answer

Yes: This can happen.  It's more likely to happen in older people, especially older women, who have lower bone density.  There's not much you can do about it, since rib fractures are usually left to heal on their own.
