Yes: This can happen. It's more likely to happen in older people, especially older women, who have lower bone density. There's not much you can do about it, since rib fractures are usually left to heal on their own.

Yes: It is possible but not common. I'd consider muscle injury as a more likely culprit. The pain from that can continue for a month or more.
