Nursing staff monitors the patient each 15 minutes, with documentation.  Patient cannot leave the unit without accompaniment.  Belongings carefully inspected, etc.  Need for ongoing precautions is reviewed daily, until psychiatrist feels they can be lifted.

Once medically stable they need psychiatric evaluation to review the crisis leading to the attempt, and whether inpatient treatment is needed.  The person may be hospitalized for more reliable diagnosis, and a start at treating the underlying problem.
