Acceptable: Most insect bites need nothing more that keeping clean. If the bites have been excoriated (scratched) the risk of infection rises and antibiotic ointment (e.g., neosporin) can be a part of risk management to reduce chances of infection.

About 6 months: The post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) after insect bites,  acne pimples, etc.  may last for about 6 months. You should use sunblock to prevent them from getting darker.

Sure, but....: It won't hurt anything, but it won't do much.  Taking benedryl is better.  Ice, topical anesthetics and calalmine lotion on the bite itself can also help.

Cold compress: Take antihistamines, e.g., claritin, (loratadine) as well for a few days.
