my three year old has an ear infection, that looks and smells very bad, black ball of pus. he has no fever and does not seem to be bothered by it at all. i have a picture of it aswell.

Earwax: Some people's earwax may have an odor.  For those people, check with a doctor to make sure that your eardrum is intact so that you can use mineral oil to keep it soft and moving outward.  Clean daily with a tissue on a finger. Do not use cotton swabs since they tend to push the wax in deeper rather than getting it out.  In the absence of pain or thick drainage, there is little risk of infection.

May be a good idea: It may be a good idea if the infection is close to the ear ring, so keep it out till infection cleared up.

Inner ear infection: The inner ear has 2 primary functions:  hearing and balance.  With an inner ear infection, you could have problems with hearing or balance or both.  Sometimes, inner ear  infection can extend to the cerebrospinal fluid and you can develop symptoms of meningitis.  This could cause neck stiffness, sensitivity to light or sound, headache.  Other general signs of infection include fevers and chills.

Consult your Doctor: If it is causing pain or getting infected you should consult your doctor as the ear ring might need to be taken out.It can only be determined after examination, .

One idea: It's a long shot, but we don't want to miss it. If the fluid contains glucose (your physician has a reagent pad and can tell), you could be leaking cerebrospinal fluid. This would be very uncommon from both ears. Have you ever had serious head trauma / basal skull fracture?

Middle ear fluid: Greetings. Middle ear fluid causes hearing loss, ear pressure and pain at times and possibly even dizziness. Not sure if your doctor recommended treatment but beginning an OTC nasal spray like Nasacort (triamcinolone) every night might help resolve the effusion. We as ENT doctors recommend considering further treatment after a total of 3 months have passed without the fluid clearing.

how long should it take for fluid to get out ear ? i'm waiting for infection meds to work and feel horrible can't hear for 5 days now everything hurts

Ask your doctor: whether you should have responded by now.  If you really have  external otitis/"water on ear", then you would be applying the medicine to the outside.  If there is too much swelling the medicine might not be getting down into the canal and a wick may be needed.  If internal otitis media/"fluid in ear", 2-3 days max. If your whole ear is swollen, you may need a different medicine.

i was diagnosed with an ear fungus and infection. being taking the drops religiously. pain has gone but ear still blocked. i have a return appointment for next week tuesday for a rinse out. is this normal?
